Dutch Louis XVI fold-over buffet, 18th century

An 18th century fold-over buffet made during the (late) Dutch Louis XVI period, circa 1790 to 1800. Built from oak and mahogany, veneered with satinwood, watered maple and mahogany, with details and stringing in Bahia rosewood, ebony, palisander, amaranth, boxwood and/or holly. The front is decorated with two narrow and one wide lacquer panel with Oriental figures, buildings and landscapes. The lacquer panels show the expected craquelure and wear.

The hinged top opens to reveal two glass / plate racks. The drawers on either side can be pulled out to enlarge the work surface. The dovetailed drawers have sliding mahogany lids, under which is a green upholstered compartment division for cutlery, napkin rings, candles and so on. Behind the central door, turning on the original pivots, is a single shelf.

The buffet rests on square tapering legs with brass ball feet. The oval brass escutcheons are decorated with beaded edges, bows and garlands. The locks are original and have a working key. The solid oak back panel is fixed with hand forged square nails. Old, well executed restorations to the veneer and non disturbing signs of use in keeping with its age. Warm contrasting colours and a fine silky sheen.
