Playing kittens by Brunel de Neuville
A charming and lively oil painting by the French animal painter Alfred Arthur Brunel de Neuville (1852 to 1941), an artist loved for his refined and playful depictions of animals.
In this atmospheric work we see three curious kittens in a rustic courtyard. One kitten attentively licks a small plate clean, while the other two watch fascinated and play with a colourful little ball. The soft fur textures, the lively posture of the animals and the subtle fall of light show the craftsmanship for which Brunel de Neuville is known. The background with stone wall and steps gives the scene a warm, homely atmosphere.
Oil on panel, in a richly decorated gilt frame that suits the character of the work and the period. Brunel de Neuville specialised in cat pieces and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. Period: late 19th or early 20th century.
