Septarian nodule on custom stand
Large septarian nodule on a custom stand. A septaria nodule is a round or oval stone nodule with a network of natural cracks on the inside, later filled with minerals such as calcite, aragonite or barite.
They usually form in old sediment layers. First a hard concretion forms in soft mud around, for example, organic material or a chemical precipitation point. During further drying, shrinkage and geological changes, cracks form on the inside. Later mineral rich water flows through those cracks and fills them.
30 to 35 million years old.
