Fossil ammonite on custom stand
Large fossilised ammonite on a custom metal stand. An ammonite is the fossil of an extinct marine animal related to today's squid, octopus and nautilus. So it was not a snail, even though the spiral shell looks like one.
Ammonites lived in the oceans from about 400 to 66 million years ago. They were particularly successful in the Mesozoic, the age of the dinosaurs, and died out in the same mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous, some 66 million years ago.
