18th century wall tapestry, Aubusson
Large French / Belgian 18th century wall tapestry. In the Netherlands these are often called Gobelins, but that is not a collective name for all antique tapestries. Gobelin was just one very well known producer of tapestries. Ours comes from France and dates from the 18th century.
This 18th century tapestry shows an idyllic, wooded landscape. In the foreground are large trees with dense foliage in dark shades of green with lighter accents on the leaves. Between the trees you look onto a clearing with water, possibly a river or pond with plants and bushes along the bank. In the background is a lighter, almost golden landscape that creates depth, with hills or fields in the distance. The whole gives a calming, almost dreamy atmosphere, typical of pastoral scenes of that time.
Signs of use in keeping with its age and as we are used to with tapestries of this age. Restored in various places, see photos. Feel free to ask for a video or more photos.
