Art cabinet with architectural marquetry, 18th century

Small table cabinet veneered in mahogany, with nine drawers and a central door, topped by a later added pyramid shaped crown. The drawer fronts are decorated with finely inlaid marquetry in light coloured wood, probably maple or pear, with stylised cityscapes: gates, arcades, towers and palm trees.

This type of architectural marquetry is associated with the South German or Tyrolean cabinetmaking tradition of the 17th and 18th centuries, and more specifically with a series of small devotional cabinets showing architecture from the Holy Land.

The interior shows the characteristics of 18th century construction. The crown and possibly the sides and back were added later, presumably in the 19th century.
